In this section I will, based on my personal experience, try my best to summarize the factors that can help you find the most appropriate professional for your legal needs.

The above considerations lead to the next aspect of choosing a lawyer: seek out a professional with in-depth expertise in the area of law relevant to your case. You should look at it in the same way as if you were trying to decide what to do when you are feeling ill. In case if you suffer from an illness, you don’t simply 'go to a doctor', rather you will visit an ophthalmologist for vision problems or a rheumatologist for musculoskeletal issues. The same applies for seeking legal assistance, you should always consult a specialist lawyer for your specific legal needs.

Traditionally, Ferenc Deák, a famous Hungarian politician in the 19th century, was the last Hungarian lawyer to know all "the laws of the land." Nowadays, specialization is not just a habit but a necessity for lawyers. Therefore, carefully consider whether to entrust your case to a professional who claims expertise in dozens of areas of law.

Although I wish I could avoid spending a whole paragraph on this topic, however "facts are stubborn things”, and it's widely known that hiring a lawyer can be a significant financial expense. It's tempting therefore, for understandable reasons, to choose the most affordable option from the many professionals available on the market.

However, it’s important to consider that there are usually good reasons for the wide variation in the fees among different lawyers and law firms. Various factors contribute to these differences, but you can be almost certain that a professional who is highly skilled in a specific area will charge more than a lawyer who takes on every case just to stay in business.

Nonetheless, it is crucial to choose a lawyer within your budget. Lawyer fees are subject to free negotiation. Some lawyers charge by the hour, while others charge a fixed fee for their services. Both methods have their advantages. With a fixed fee, you know exactly how much you will have to pay in the end, whereas an hourly rate allows you to better monitor the actual work done by the lawyer.

Before signing a Retainer Agreement, always ask about the expected costs of the task you are requesting to be carried out. This will help avoid any unpleasant surprises in the future.

An important question is whether to take your case to a law firm or an individual lawyer working as a quasi-independent contractor. The big advantage of law firms,is that there are several lawyers working there, so on a more-eyes-see-more basis, lawyers can discuss individual cases with each other – subject to the principle of attorney-client privilege, of course – and, if necessary, ask for confirmation and advice from each other.

However, law firms can also have disadvantages. You might be impressed when consulting with the Managing Partner of a big firm who has more than 25 years of experience under his/her belt, only to find out later that your case is actually being handled by another lawyer who is less experienced or your case might be entirely be entirely entrusted to “simple” a trainee lawyer.

Naturally, this does not automatically mean that you will receive lower quality service, but you should be aware that in most law firms, cases are often delegated to lower levels. As a result, the submissions that go to court may not be prepared by the senior lawyer who has made such a good impression on you at the first meeting. Additionally, in larger law firms, you might end up paying not only for the handling of your case but also for the rent of the flashy office space and the salaries of trainee lawyers, secretaries, and other support staff.

In contrast, if you choose an individual lawyer or a solo law firm, you can be assured that the professional you hire will handle your case from start to finish. They will conduct the initial consultation, draft all the submissions, and represent you at every court hearing. Furthermore, many individual lawyers and solo law firms work in close professional cooperation with each other, ensuring that you still benefit from the expertise of multiple professionals.

Perhaps I should have started with this point. The lawyer-client relationship is fundamentally an interpersonal trust relationship that cannot exist without mutual sympathy and absolute trust between the client and the lawyer. This is especially true in criminal and family law cases, where individuals often disclose the most intimate aspects of their personal lives to a stranger.

Therefore, if you find a lawyer or firm that offers high-quality legal services at a reasonable price but feel that the chemistry is missing for any reason – no matter how trivial – it is better to look for another professional. In the long run, insisting on working with someone you cannot fully cooperate with can lead to significant disappointment and unnecessary expenses.

So, how do I fit into all of this?
